Customs brokers aided within the police investigation that began in June 2021 when police detected what they suspected was a bootleg operation to ship double-use aeronautical gear to Russia.
The police mentioned in a press release that they suspected the smuggling ring was meant to assist Russia elude the European Union commerce sanctions imposed on it following the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
“The smuggling ring that has been damaged was designed to provide navy gear for the aeronautic sector,” the Nationwide Police mentioned.
The smugglers had developed a “subtle” system of evading worldwide customs controls, police mentioned, that made the shipments look like destined for nations not underneath embargo, just for them to finish up in Russia.
The arrests had been accompanied by raids on the suspects’ properties. The case is now within the fingers of a Nationwide Courtroom decide.
Police didn’t present any extra data on the id of the suspects when requested by The Related Press.
